Following Ash Wednesday, on the first Sunday of Lent, the scriptures take us to another down-to-earth ritual. Each year, when the harvest begins, the Israelite farmers are told to gather a basket full of the first fruits of the harvest to present to God at the place of worship. Christians ought to mark the season of Lent, as a time to redouble a commitment, to care for the most vulnerable in our communities, especially those without the privilege of generational wealth, those considered aliens and those considered outsiders in our communities.
