Sermon Text: Ezekiel 36:22-28
Sermon Theme: The Holy Spirit Sent Forth! I. He Comes To Hallow God’s Great Name!(vs.22-23). II. He Renews Our Hearts and Spirits! (Vs.25-26) III. He Brings and Preserves Us In Christ Jesus’ Kingdom! (Vs.27-28) by Rev. Nathan J. Rusert
I.N.R.I. Alleluia! The Lord is risen! Alleluia! Christ Jesus has ascended on high leading captivity captive to shower gifts upon sinner - for He now fills all things! Alleluia! The 40th day of Easter fell last Thursday night and we gathered to rejoice! We rejoiced because Jesus of Nazareth’s ascension to the Father’s right hand is for our salvation!
Imagine, now our human nature is honored in the highest heavens at God the Father’s seat of rule, power, and authority over all things. We believe in “one Lord Jesus Christ”. In His incarnation our human nature was inseparably bound to His eternal divinity as the only begotten Son of God. We confess this sublime mystery - “I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord.” Theologians call this truth the ‘personal union’ or ‘hypostatic union’ - the God/Man Christ Jesus. It is a mystery at the heart of our Creator’s saving rescue plan from eternity for fallen prideful sinful mankind. On Trinity Sunday we will confess this mystery saying with the ancient church: “28 Therefore, it is the right faith that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is at the same time both God and man. 29 He is God, begotten from the substance of the Father before all ages; and He is man, born from the substance of His mother in this age: 30 perfect God and perfect man, composed of a rational soul and human flesh; 31 equal to the Father with respect to His divinity, less than the Father with respect to His humanity. 32 Although He is God and man, He is not two, but one Christ: 33 one, however, not by the conversion of the divinity into flesh, but by the assumption of the humanity into God; 34 one altogether, not by confusion of substance, but by unity of person. 35 For as the rational soul and flesh is one man, so God and man is one Christ,”
Jesus’ ascension didn’t fracture His personal union. A false teacher, Nestorius, taught that Jesus’ human nature was separate from His divine nature. Nestorius couldn’t comprehend how the eternally only begotten Son of the Father could possibly be present in the embryo the Holy Spirit created in the womb of the Virgin Mary. The Scripture confesses: Col 2:9 For in Him [Jesus] dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;” Many Christians have wrongly understood Jesus’ ascension in nestorian terms. They teach that Jesus’ human nature is now far removed from our creation confined to the Father’s right hand until judgement day. This false teaching robs the struggling sinner of the comfort that Jesus- the God/Man draws near able to sympathize with them in all their struggles with sin for He is their Brother - True Man. He is able to deliver us from all our sin for He is their Lord - True God drawing near to rescue sinners.
Repent from this false belief! Rejoice that your Brother is enthroned on high filling all things. His rule of grace is now. The Holy Spirit Sent Forth! I. He Comes To Hallow God’s Great Name!(vs.22-23). II. He Renews Our Hearts and Spirits! (Vs.25-26) III. He Brings and Preserves Us In Christ Jesus’ Kingdom! (Vs.27-28)
I. Idolatry - the breaking of the first commandment leads us away from our Creator into Satanic enslavement in evil. Pride parading perversion of God’s created order is demonic. Evil rejoices to pervert God’s gift of sexuality meant only for the lifelong committed union of one man and one woman for the procreation of children - into following our own selfish lusts. Rebelling against our created calling, written upon our very chromosomes, we follow evil fantasies that we can make our bodies what we want them to be - not what our God created them to be as male or female from the moment of our conception.
Idolatry was Israel and Judah’s besetting sin. The northern nation of Israel would be lost to the Assyrian genocide in 722B.C.. The southern nation of Judah, refusing to repent, would be taken into seven decades of captivity in Babylon in 586B.C.. The greatest Old Testament scholar of the Christian Church, the Apostle Paul, taught young pastor Timothy: 2Ti 2:11-13 This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, We shall also live with Him. (12) If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. (13) If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.” Our God remains faithful! He will not deny the promise of Jesus spoken to Adam, Noah, Abraham, Judah, and His servant David. David’s Son and David’s Lord would redeem mankind and His Kingdom will never end!
Faithful God didn’t abandon idolatrous Judah, but in exile sent them godly government officials: “Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.” He also sent them the faithful prophet Ezekiel to preach the promise of David’s Descendant - Jesus of Nazareth to them.
What would King Jesus’ everlasting Kingdom look like? Listen! (Vs.22) Our resurrected and ascended Lord Jesus gathers sinners into His Kingdom. These are not the proud trusting in all the good that they’ve done for God to earn them a spot in heaven. These are the poor, maim, lame, and blind sinners. Sinners who cannot by their own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ their Lord or come to Him. He sends forth God the Holy Spirit to gather sinners into His Kingdom through cross-won empty-tomb certified forgiveness of sins in His flesh and blood in His Word.
The Lord God speaks to the House of Israel, even though Judah remained, why? The Holy Spirit raises sinners dead in their trespasses and sins to new life in Christ Jesus. Israel had profaned God’s name by idolatry in Judah, filling even the temple with statues to false gods. They made God’s Name a laughing stock as in judgment God destroyed their Temple and their nation. The nations thought that the God of Israel was only a man-made idol which could not save His Temple or His people. They had profaned God’s holy name.
Have we? King Jesus teaches us to pray, “Our Father in heaven - hallowed be Thy Name” We believe, teach, and confess that “God's name is certainly holy in itself, but we pray in this petition that it may be kept holy among us also.” How is God's name kept holy? God's name is kept holy when the Word of God is taught in its truth and purity, and we, as the children of God, also lead holy lives according to it.” We profane God’s Holy Name when we don’t care if God’s Word is taught in its truth and purity in our congregations. We lust after the world with its power, wealth, and numbers - following the lie to “give the customers what they want.” Rather than calling sinners to repentance. We profane God’s Holy Name when years pass and we know as little of Christ’s teachings as we did at the beginning of the year. We listened only out of habit, not to be led into all truth by the Holy Spirit. We profane God’s Holy Name - placed upon us in infant baptism - when we live like the evil world around us giving the nod to pride, perversion, and our culture of corruption and death.
King Jesus send us God the Holy Spirit through the Gospel into our ears, heart, and daily life! (Vs.23) God hallows His Name. Bringing a remnant back to Judah and Jerusalem after 70 years. He preserves David’s line that His only begotten Son might be born by the power of the Holy Spirit through the Virgin Mary. God hallows His Name as God’s only begotten Son humbles Himself to shoulder our burden of the Law shedding His holy blood for us at 8 days of age. He willingly washes the sewage and stench of our sin upon Himself as John baptizes Him in the Jordan to begin His public ministry. God’s Name is hallowed as Jesus is condemned, mocked, nailed to the tree - “Jesus of Nazareth - King of the Jews!” God’s Name is hallowed in His crucified Son - winning our redemption by His passion. When He was lifted up - Jesus drew all nations to Himself - 40 days later God’s Name is hallowed as Jesus is enthroned to rule over all kingdoms on earth and in heaven. 10 days later God the Holy Spirit is poured out to gather us into Christ’s Kingdom - the Church.
His Name is hallowed! His Name is Mercy! Jesus the Savior of sinners! Of me! Of you! God the Holy Spirit frees you from sin’s captivity!
II. We live in the time of grace. Our salvation is accomplished on Calvary. King Jesus breathes us alive by the Holy Spirit in His Church in baptism, absolution, Gospel preaching, and the Lord’s Supper. We live in the 1,000 year rule of Christ’s gracious Kingdom - The Time of the Church the Holy Spirit’s renewal of mankind through the Gospel.
King Jesus sends forth God the Holy Spirit to gather us into His kingdom! Hear! (Vs.24-25) You never earn forgiveness - it is gifted to you through the life, suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus by the Holy Spirit. Baptism is never your personal decision - it is the Triune God who sprinkles baptismal water upon you. Daily He works the forgiveness of your sins cleansing you in Jesus’ living blood! Daily He rescues you from death and the devil as the Holy Spirit applies the victory of new Easter life to you. Daily He gives you eternal salvation for King Jesus prepares a place for you as the Holy Spirit declares you citizens of heaven, beloved children of the Heavenly Father in Jesus.
Daily God the Holy Spirit renews us from all our filthiness and idolatry - as He preserves us in Christ’s Church through the Gospel breathed into our ears with His life! Daily our hearts are made new again by the Holy Spirit through the forgiveness of sins richly showering upon us in King Jesus! (Vs.26) The stony dead sinful heart of our old adam is removed by the Holy Spirit within this Christian Church and we are given the heart of Jesus - flesh redeemed and renewed by our King!
III. King Jesus doesn’t leave us to wander alone as sheep gone astray for the devilish wolf to devour with evil pride. Hear His gracious gift with which He crowns you! (Vs.27) He puts His Holy Spirit within you! Your body isn’t your own. God the Father created you. God the Son redeemed you. God the Holy Spirit washes you forgiven making your body His Holy Temple. No longer can evil bind you to parade in sin towards hell. Now He daily frees you to fight against your own sinful flesh. Daily by the Holy Spirit you rise to newness of life as you drown your old sinful flesh with sorrow over your sins and turning from them to King Jesus in His Word!
Now King Jesus leads us by the Holy Spirit towards Home - the resurrection of our bodies and the life of the world to come. We confess the truth: On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. ! Alleluia! Christ is Risen! Alleluia! Christ Jesus rules - forever and ever! Amen.
