CHRIST ALONE - 3
Pursue, Pivot, Put
The gospel of Jesus Christ is the announcement that God came to earth,
lived a sinless life, died for our sins, rose from the grave, and offers us the
free gift of salvation. Our response to the gospel is believing that what
Jesus did for us is enough. Trusting him to save us from our sins and
joyfully giving Jesus our lives and surrender to his lordship.
Colossians 3:1-5 (ESV) If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that
are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things
that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is
hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will
appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual
immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
Colossians 1:22 (NLT) Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of
Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and
you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.
Sanctification is the process and actions of being freed from sin. To
be sanctified is to cleanse internally and externally.
1. PURSUE.
Colossians 3:1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are
above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
● You are the product of your PURSUIT.
● My direction and attention are going to determine my destiny.
● You will find what you seek.
Religion: "I messed up. Dad's gonna kill me."
Gospel: "I messed up. I need to call Dad."
Matthew 7:7 (ESV) “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it
will be opened to you.
Matthew 6:33 (ESV) But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all
these things will be added to you.
Psalm 34:4 I sought the Lord and he answered and he delivered me from
all my fears.
Acts 13:36 For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell
asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption,
● You can never separate your purpose from your pursuit.
2. PIVOT.
Colossians 3:2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on
earth.
● I've got to change my thinking because I'll never grow past my
mentality.
● My thoughts determine my life and my mindset creates my reality.
Luke 10:27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and
with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as
yourself.”
● Love God with your inner life.
James 3:4 Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong
winds (that’s external), they are guided by a very small rudder (that’s internal) wherever
the will of the pilot directs.
3. PUT.
Colossians 3:5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality,
impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
● Eventually you'll crave your own diet.
Colossians 3:5-16 PUT TO DEATH therefore what is earthly in you: sexual
immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On
account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you
were living in them. 8 But now you must PUT THEM ALL AWAY: anger, wrath, malice,
slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you
have PUT OFF the old self with its practices 10 and have PUT ON the new self, which is
being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 11 Here there is not Greek
and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is
all, and in all. 12 PUT ON then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate
hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if
one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you,
so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these PUT ON love, which binds everything
together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which
indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in
you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and
hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever
you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to
God the Father through him.
