Episode Notes
Series: Messy Church 1st Corinthians 10
Be Confident May 4, 2025
Matthew 7:21-23, Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in Heaven. On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and cast out demons in Your name, and do many mighty works in Your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness.’
Proverbs 16:18, Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Big Idea: Place your confidence in the Lord… Not in yourself. Overconfidence is a sure way to fall into temptation.
1st Corinthians 10:12, Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
Living on the edge of overconfidence may lead you to fall into:
1. Idolatry.
Exodus 32
1st Corinthians 10:7, Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.”
1st John 5:20-21, And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
2. Sexual Immorality.
Numbers 25
1st Corinthians 10:8, We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty- three thousand fell in a single day.
Hebrews 13:4, Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
3. Trying God.
Numbers 21
1st Corinthians 10:9, We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents,
Romans 6:1-4, What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
4. Complaining.
Numbers 16
1st Corinthians 10:10, nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer.
Philippians 4:11-13, Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
Next Step: How can we be better examples to the next generation?
1st Corinthians 11:1, Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
