Pastor Raymond Purdy
Many Christians, however, neglect the unseen areas of their Christian walk. We have a tendency to place greater importance on outward service than inner character. We do before we are. We look for approval of people while becoming careless in our walk with God.

LESSON 4: HUMILITY
TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 2:1–8
“If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, 2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” (Philippians 2:1–8)
INTRODUCTION

“For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.” (Romans 8:29)
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:” (Philippians 2:5)
“Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” (Philippians 2:6 8)
“Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.” (Proverbs 18:12)
“By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life.” (Proverbs 22:4)
“When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.” (Proverbs 11:2)
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18)
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” (James 4:10)
1. SEEK A WALK OF _Unity_
“If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.” (Philippians 2:1–2)
A. It Is Based on Our _Fellowship_ in Christ
“If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,” (Philippians 2:1)
“But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:” (John 15:26)
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,” (Galatians 5:22)
B. It Is Evidenced by the _Character_ of Christ
“Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.” (Philippians 2:2)
“Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.” (1 John 4:11)
“Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:3)
“Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;” (Philippians 1:27)
2. SEPARATE FROM Contention
“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” (Philippians 2:3)
A. Refuse _Strife_
“Let nothing be done through strife…” (Philippians 2:3)
“Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.” (Proverbs 26:20)
“The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.” (Proverbs 26:22)
“For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.” (James 3:16)
“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” (Ephesians 4:29)
“No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.” (2 Timothy 2:4)
B. Maintain _Lowliness_ of Mind
“…or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind…” (Philippians 2:3)
“For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.” (Galatians 6:3)
“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.” (Romans 12:3)
“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:31–32)
C. Esteem _Others_ Better
“…let each esteem other better than themselves.” (Philippians 2:3)
“…Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” (1 Peter 5:5)
3. SERVE _Others_ IN NEED
“Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on
the things of others.” (Philippians 2:4)
“For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that
serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as
he that serveth.” (Luke 22:27)
A. It Is an _Unselfish_ Look
“Look not every man on his own things…” (Philippians 2:4)
B. It Is an _Outward_ Look
“…but every man also on the things of others.” (Philippians 2:4)
“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” (James 1:27)
“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.” (Galatians 5:13)
